Roland Anthony Gravois was born along side the Mississippi River in Vacherie, Louisiana. His father was an accountant, a graduate of Soule Business School in New Orleans, Louisiana and his mother was a school teacher, a graduate of the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette, Louisiana. When he was about one year old, his father accepted employment on Westover Plantation in West Baton Rouge Parish, where he grew up. Following graduation from Port Allen High School, he enrolled in college. His education was interrupted World War II by service in the United States Navy (Seabees) after which Roland returned to Louisiana State University where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering. He and Carmen Generes were college sweethearts and following their graduation in 1950, they were married in New Orleans.
After briefly working in the Oil Industry and with International Business Machines, Roland went to work with Louisiana Power and Light Company. The company became Entergy Corporation, from which he retired in 1988.
Roland and Carmen remained in the New Orleans area until 2000, after which they moved to Gonzales, Louisiana. They are the parents of four children, grandparents of four grandchildren and great-grandparents of four great-grandchildren.
